The unrealistic expectations of porn
Pornography (aka porn) involves forms of media, such as images, literature, and films that induce sexual arousal. They often depict sex acts, including any forms of sexual intercourse, sexual play, and masturbation. Pornography may set unrealistic expectations for our sexuality as well as our sexual partners. This may affect our enjoyment of sex. In addition, our body image may be negatively affected.
Additionally, it creates fantasies that are at times unhealthy. While it is perfectly normal to have preferences and to explore fantasies and fetishes with your partner, it should be done in a safe environment. For example, while BDSM may be extremely pleasurable for some people, the portrayal of BDSM pornographic materials and even mainstream media may lead to unnecessary obsessions with violence. Some fantasies, such as paedophilia, are also against the law. It is thus important to be educated on sexual health and set the right expectations.
Here are some unrealistic sexpectations associated with pornography:
#1 Size matters
Mainstream pornography often depicts men to have a larger-than-average-sized penis. As a result, people often equate size with pleasurable sex or to be more sexually desirable. The truth is, we all come in different shapes and sizes. The quality of sex does not depend on size, but more often on other factors, such as the existing relationship with the partner, communication, body language, and technique.
#2 If a woman did not orgasm (or was not wet enough), he/she/they did not enjoy it
A woman can still find sex pleasurable even without orgasms.
#3 It is easy for men to achieve erections
Most male actors use Viagra to keep their erections on set. It is normal to not always have erections when you want to, even if you are enjoying it.
#4 It is abnormal to have premature ejaculations
Premature ejaculations are actually very common and can affect anyone at any age. This is particularly true for most adolescents who are just exploring sex for the first time.
#5 It is not important to use barrier contraception during sexual intercourse
Most porn actors and actresses are subjected to regular STD screening. Porn does not depict real life where it is extremely common to be infected with an STD if you are sexually active. You should screen regularly for STD according to the guidelines here.
You should discuss this openly with your sexual partners or even a mentor who could point you in the right direction. If you have any questions, drop us an email.
